Som vanlig når Extralite kommer med noe nytt, har de tynet alt så langt det går. Så også med ExtraBolt 9.1 bremseskivebolter. De er i titan, men i steden for å nøye seg med å bare lage vanlige bolter av titan, har de gått ned et hakk i størrelse på Torx-sporet i hodet, og kan dermed fjerne mye metall på utsiden av hodet. Torx er uansett så sterkt at man ikke runder sporet. Videre har de laget et hull i enden av bolten, men bare et lite stykke, slik at det ikke svekker bolten der skjærkreftene er store, der selve bremseskiven sitter.

Det betyr, mine damer og herrer, at man kan spare utrolige 13.4g med ExtraBolt 9.1 sammenliknet med standard bolter. Men den egentlige gevinsten her er at titanbolter ikke ruster, de holder seg blanke og fine "til evig tid".

Og til de som bruker alu-bolter til å holde bremseskiven: Ikke gjør det. Alu har helt feil egenskaper til de kreftene som er i sving, og bommer du bittelitt på tilskruingsmomentet (det holder med feilkalibrert momentnøkkel), kan boltene ryke neste gang du panikkbremser. Når et sett Ashima alu-bolter veier 4.8g, er vektbesparelsen bare 0,6-0,8g tilsammen på begge hjulene, og det er det ikke verd å risikere livet for.

Først ute er navsettet. Med keramiske hybrdlagre er vekten 240g. Dermed er 235g oppnåelig ved å bytte ut de to største lagerne i baknavet med de hel-keramiske som ble til overs etter det orginale Sub Kilo-prosjektet.

Den store utfordringen har vært få tak i de letteste titaneikene fra Pillar til hjulsidene med lavt spenn. Pillar leverer dem kun med 2.3mm diameter i gjengene. Løsningen ble å kjøpe eiker med bøy, og så rette dem ut. Hvorvidt dette faktisk vil funke, vet jeg ikke før jeg har prøvd. Av det jeg har klart å lese meg til, skal det gå bra. Er ikke eikene sterke nok, ryker de under byggingen. Er problemet at de ikke får bra nok levetid, vil de ryke en etter en når jeg bruker dem. Altså uansett ikke noe stor fare under bruk. Eikene er veldig tynne på midten sammenlignet med ved hodet, og de skal i tillegg ikke bygges med veldig høyt spenn, så jeg er håpefull. Jeg har uansett bestilt ståleiker jeg kan bruke hvis dette ikke funker.

I 2009 syklet jeg ritt med et <a href="http://dogstarbicycles.blogspot.no/2009/09/sub-kilo-ferdig.html">hjulsett på 954g</a>, for vanlige dekk. Disse hjulene gikk det helt greit for meg på 80kg å sykle ritt med, men det var ikke på noen måte stive. Målet for denne sesongen er å bygge 27.5"-hjul på under kiloen, men ikke gå på akkord med stivheten. Og som i 2009 skal også disse hjulene være for vanlige dekk.<br />

De forrige Sub Kilo-hjulene bestod av Extralite UltraFront fremnav, et prototype Extralite HyperRear, Pillar- og Marwi titaneiker, samt Innolite-felger på ca 240g/stk. Da sesongen var over ble de myke Innolite-felgene (ca 70% av stivheten til Podium MMX) byttet ut med Crest-felger. Vekten gikk opp til 1117g, men den ekstra stivheten gjorde at hjulene allikevel var raskere for min kjørestil.

Sub Kilo 27.5 er planlagt å ta utgangspunkt i et sett Extralite HyperHubs 28h, med 15mm aksling foran og 135mm bak. Jeg går for keramiske hybridlagre for å spare ca 10g, og bytter muligens ut et par av lagerne med helkeramiske lagre som jeg plukker ut av de gamle Sub Kilo-hjulene, hvis det er noe vekt å spare på det. Vekten på navene i 32h med vanlige lagre er 168g bak og 78g foran. Med 28g blir det 3 færre "tapper" som eikene festes i, så totalt ender jeg på en navvekt på ca 235g.

Enn så lenge finnes det ingen brede og lette karbonfelger i 27.5". Løsningen blir da å bygge hjulsettet med en Light Bicycle-felg som lages litt lettere enn vanlig, ca 360g. Da har jeg et hjulsett jeg kan bruke inntil videre<br />

Den mest spennende 27.5"-felgen som er på vei, er Tunes nye 3.C på ca 260g. Ingen av dimensjonene er kjent ennå, men hvis hullene til niplene er 6mm, ser den temmelig identisk ut med Crest, altså ca 21mm innvendig bredde. Det er ikke bredest i klassen, men helt fint til 2.25" for rittbruk. Når den kommer, sparer jeg ca 200g på hjulsettet.

Extralite har foreløpig lagt sitt CarboCamber 27.5"-prosjekt på is, inntil 27.5" tar av skikkelig. Den blir i såfall lik CarboCamber 29, med 24mm innvendig bredde, og ca 270g vekt.<br />

En bred karbonfelg er veldig stiv sammenliknet med en alufelg, og man kan bruke veldig lette eiker og allikevel få et stivt hjul. Denne gangen blir det lettvektseiker fra Pillar.<br />

På drivsiden bak og skivesiden foran blir det Pillar MegaLite SS, en bladet ståleike som starter livet som en rund eike på 2mm-1.3mm-2.0mm, og blades til 1.6mm x 0.9mm. Vekten er 3.6g i 260mm.

Forskjellen i vekt mellom titaneikene og ståleikene representerer også forskjellen i stivhet, så det blir fin balanse mellom siden med høyt og lavt spenn. Eikene blir ca 280mm lange, så vekten blir ca 190g for 28 stk.

Alunipler i 2.0mm x 12mm veier 0.3g pr stk, så der er vi på 17g.

Den enkle løsningen er å bytte ut bakramma med en Carbine-bakramme. Men da må jeg bruke 160mm bremseskive bak, jeg må bruke 142x12 (har 10mm gjennomgående nå - stivt nok og mye lettere), og selve bakramma er et par hundre gram tyngre, både pga sterkere konstruksjon og pga store utbyttbare dropouts i aluminium.

Siden jeg allerede har en Carbine-bakramme stående klar, tok jeg en sjanse og slipet vekk nok karbon i Carbine SL-bakramma til at det ble plass til et Rocket Ron 2.25 på en Crest 27.5"-felg. Uheldigivis måtte det tas bort så mye karbon at det ble hull!

Det å bare slenge på et par 27.5"hjul på en sykkel designet for 26"-hjul er i utgangspunktet en dårlig idé, selv om det skulle være plass til hjulene. Kranken blir halvannen cm høyere, og det er ikke ønskelig. Heldigvis er Carbine SL laget slik at bakenden kan senkes for å kompensere for større bakhjul, uten at bakhjulet tar borti ramma ved full komprimering. Videre er den laget for opp til 150mm gaffel, så med en 120mm oppsett med 27.5"-hjul er fremdeles lavere enn 150mm med 26". Jeg får litt slakkere vinkler enn det jeg har hatt før, og det er bare fint når jeg får større hjul som bare triller over småtteriet jeg før har måttet svinge runt.

Det neste som må gjøres er å finne en lett 27.5"-gaffel med 120mm vandring, samt få laget noen skikkelig lette 27.5" ritthjul. Stay tuned!
